    Asked what her biggest accomplishment was as the North Halton Twisters president, Lindsay Oliver laughs. “Probably finding my replacement,” she says. Oliver had always been willing to do whatever was needed to help the North Halton Girls Hockey Association, from coaching, to coordinating tournaments. So when someone was needed to fill the role of president, she stepped up. Oliver held the position for six years, from 2011 to 2016. But she knew her greatest strengths were not in a boardroom.

    Residents raised concerns about traffic and infrastructure at a public meeting Monday evening regarding a proposed large housing development in Georgetown South. A dozen people neighbouring the land to be developed brought up a variety of issues, but traffic was the most common. “It’s 20 minutes at 5 p.m. to go from the roundabout at 10 Sideroad to Winston Churchill (a stretch of 700 metres),” said one 10th Line resident.

    In 2021, Leanne Muscat would watch from her home as staff at Mountainview Residence paraded through the parking lot each day waving to the residents. It was the staff’s way of giving those inside, whose movements were restricted by COVID protocols, something to look forward to. “We would stand on our deck every day at 2 p.m. and cheer them on,” Muscat said. That daily routine went on for weeks. Then one day Muscat found a note on her door thanking her for the support.

She knew she needed help, but it was so tough to ask. “I thought I was going to throw up,” she said. “I didn’t know if I had the nerve.” Melissa Loyer’s experience was the same. She had struggled with addiction and worried what she might do to herself without help.

Town council recently stated its intention to designate 99-103 Main Street South under the Ontario Heritage Act. The building has been home to several prominent Georgetown businesses, including J.G. Willson’s funeral home and the Georgetown Herald.
