    An amateur boxing card with a patriotic theme is set to take place this Flag Day. Promoter Doug Long recently announced he will host the Gloves and Glory Flag Day Showdown on June 14 at the Holiday Inn Scranton East in Dunmore. “It’s probably the best theme that I’ve ever done before because there is so much meaning behind it,” Long said. “We’re going to have our veterans bring in the honor guard. I think it’s the best theme I’ve ever put together. I love the red, white and blue flags.

    SCRANTON — “Irish” Gene Reed was still an amateur boxer in the mid 1980s when he started helping train boxers at Weston Field. He continued to work with boxers even after he turned professional, sometimes fighting on the undercard and then working the corner in the main event. Reed, who retired as a boxer in 1999 but continues to train boxers at the Irish Boxing Club, was honored Friday at a ceremony at Weston Field for his 40 years of dedication to the club and the community.

    DUNMORE — A focus of Onix Rodriguez’s latest training camp was improving his footwork to throw the left hook. The results of the hard work paid off Saturday. The southpaw from Scranton’s Irish Boxing Club repeatedly strung Cameron Reid with left hooks over the three-round amateur bout to earn a victory on points in front of 650 at War of the Warriors at the Holiday Inn Scranton East. With Rodriguez trying to establish the jab in the first round, Reid slipped in and landed a right to the body.
