The whānau of Ngāti Kuku Ngāi Tukairangi of Ngāi Te Rangi in Tauranga held a special pōwhiri today for the return of their tupuna Enoka Te Whanake’s taiaha that was used in the 1864 Gate Pā Battle and gifted to Nathan Goldwater in 1867. Along with the taiaha was a document written at the time of the gifting to explain the taiaha was used in the Pukehinahina battle and that it took the lives of many Pākehā soldiers. It also explained Enoka gifting the taiaha to Nathan in friendship.

A six-year journey towards addressing serious health inequities for Māori was realised yesterday with the opening of a new multi-million dollar health centre in Hamilton. Kiingi Tuheitia opened the $12 million Te Kōhao Health Wellness and Diagnostic Centre in the heart of the Enderley community in East Hamilton. Kīngitanga spokesman Ngira Simmonds said Kīngi Tuheitia was honoured to open the new facility, which will address long standing health inequalities for Māori.

Activist, actor, artist, and Arts Foundation laureate Tame Iti yesterday explained his art experiences, knowledge, and aspirations in front of a 200-strong audience in Rotorua today for a programme called All in for Arts: He waka toi e eke noa nei tatou. The programme is a collaboration between the Arts Foundation and Creative NZ in which artists travel the country and promote and foster the arts at a community level.

Te Whānau a Maru Haeremuri and Te Whānau a Pararaki hapū of Te Whānau a Apanui have launched a $10 million water irrigation system that sends water from the Raukokore awa direct to areas of Raukokore for watering orchards. Water from the awa will also be pumped to a holding pond to be used when river levels are low. This technology will create more opportunities to expand the orchard businesses in the area and create more employment in and around Raukokore.
