    CAPTAIN Sir David Younger died on June 14, 2024 at the age of 85. He was Lord Lieutenant of Tweeddale for 20 years, from 1994 to 2014, a founder of the Broughton Brewery in Broughton, and a lover of Peeblesshire, its people and its countryside. He gave unstinting service to a community he loved and supported for more than 40 years. John David Bingham Younger was born on May 20, 1939.

    After we negotiated the rush-hour traffic in Kyiv, the women of the International Centre for Ukrainian Victory took us to the top floor of the high-rise block in which we were due to meet. Despite the mist, we had a panoramic view of the city beneath us. Restaurants and bars were doing good business. Tosca was on at the opera. All seemed to underline that this is a flourishing European city. Our hosts embodied the mobilisation of Ukraine’s civil society for national defence.
