Comox residents are being encouraged to keep their eyes on the skies over the next few weeks as the Canadian Forces Snowbirds make their annual return to Vancouver Island for pre-season training. The Snowbirds are flying twice a day over Comox Valley from May 3 to 24 as they gear up for their 2025 season of air shows. “We’re always excited to return to 19 Wing and the beautiful Comox Valley for spring training,” Capt. Phil Rochon, public affairs officer for the Snowbirds, said in an email.

Vancouver Island University is eyeing cuts to several undergraduate and graduate programs in an attempt to tackle its long-running budget deficit. The proposed changes, announced in a message posted on the VIU website, would see six programs suspended and 13 cancelled entirely. “We know that news like this can be unsettling,” reads the announcement, signed by acting president Emily Huner and acting provost and vice-president Claire Grogan.

Sooke residents will head to the polls on July 12 as the district seeks to fill a council seat left vacant by the election of former councillor Dana Lajeunesse to the provincial legislature. Lajeunesse resigned from council last November, following a successful campaign to represent Juan de Fuca-Malahat as an MLA. The District of Sooke announced the byelection on Monday.
