    B.C.’s police watchdog says there are no reasonable grounds to believe a Victoria police officer committed an offence in a case where a man’s leg was broken during his transfer from a police vehicle to a holding cell. According to a report by the Independent Investigations Office of B.C., police were called to a Victoria home on Aug. 30, 2023, by a man who said another man was hitting him, then tried to kick in the bathroom door when he hid there to make the call.

    Police say they expect to recommend criminal charges against a new driver clocked doing 174 km/h on the Pat Bay Highway early Thursday who fled police and was later determined to be impaired. A Saanich patrol officer spotted the vehicle speeding in the 4000-block of the Pat Bay Highway just before 3 a.m., and clocked it at 174 km/h in an 80 km/h zone, police said.
