You know, it started with the judicial reform, continued with COVID, and then those voices became even stronger during the war. This is not going to be my typical “We are winning” post. I know I play the tough guy. Most Israelis do. But we’re all in a deep state of shock and devastation. Some Israelis won’t admit that publicity. Others don’t even realize it themselves. I’ve met several organizations and people over the past few weeks that are starting to think about the day after from a mental health perspective. But let me tell you a little bit about what it’s like to be an Israeli and a Jew as we wrap up 2023.

On Saturday morning, I was in synagogue in Beit Shemesh, a city just west of Jerusalem, when a sudden scream came from the other side of the synagogue. "Siren!"It took us a few seconds to understand what was happening, but we quickly ran to the bomb shelter. But Sabbath morning was also a holiday in which Jews come to synagogue to celebrate the Torah and dance with Torah scrolls. The small bomb shelter in the synagogue was far from equipped to handle many hundreds of people.
