When you think of the word Judaica, your first association might be your local store selling “Jewish products.”This might include mezuzot, talitot, tefillin, and even kippot. But when I hear the word Judaica, I think of the Torah and the role of Judah, one of the 12 tribes. When I hear the word Judaica, I think about our rich history and our indigenous land, Judea. That’s right, what the world calls The West Bank today is actually Judea and Samaria.

I really don’t think we all understand the absolute miracles that we witnessed last week here in Israel. In fact, I am sure we don’t. Let’s break this down. Israel has three air defense systems, each one of them a technological wonder and that’s not me saying it. That’s Dr. Daniel Gold who basically invented the Iron Dome who told me that. The level and sophistication of the Iron Dome is simply unparalleled.

We know that before Mashiach comes, we will experience what we call “Chevley Mashiach”, loosely translated as the birthing pains of Mashiach. In other words, before the ultimate light arrives, we will experience great pain and darkness. However, the word “Chevley” also means “Ropes”.

Leaves, while they might seem like a trivial and insignificant part of nature that just require us to clean them all year around, can actually teach us a profound lesson on life. In today’s day and age, the era of cancel culture, one bad word about someone can truly murder their essence. One piece of slander can change a person’s life forever. One might make the claim that “It’s only words.” Well, just as leaves blow in the wind and are impossible to retrieve, so to, a word.

Gray is not just a color, it’s also a reality. The world is nuanced, a world that is not black and white, but rather, gray. Most things in this world are indeed gray. And then there are indeed things that are black and white, like a war between good and evil. The word gray in Hebrew is “afor,” which shares a root with the war “afar,” which means dust. We all know we come from dust and we will return to dust. If we live our life with that in mind, we remain humble.

Surely, all these years later, you’ve heard that Israel is The Startup Nation, but perhaps it’s time to retire that title and change it to something more along the lines of “Scale up Nation.”Once upon a time, Israel was known for building amazing tech.

I went back and forth about writing these words because I don’t feel like I’m prepared enough, knowledgeable enough about the subject, but I felt the need to at least start it. I’m writing this after just coming back from a shiva house. But this wasn’t just any shiva house. I went with Racheli to console our rabbi, Rabbi Shalom Rosner. His father passed away at the age of 85. The reason I say that this wasn’t just any shiva house is not because it was my rabbi we were consoling.
