    Okay, I admit it. I bought this book for the title, which should win an award for being so clever and evocative. And while the eponymous short story in this collection of 13 stories by Hilma Wolitzer (mother of novelist Meg Wolitzer, in case you wondered about the same last name) is fabulous, it is just the opening entry among equally fabulous stories.

It's as if a genie has appeared in the first pages of the book to offer her three wishes, bound to be granted before the end. That our heroine, a tabula rasa, is unnamed seems to confirm that she's simply waiting for experience to give her an identity and some complexity.

Reading a good essay is like sitting next to an interesting stranger on a train while she tells you something about her life and the way she views the larger world. Among contemporary essayists, Jo Ann Beard, Phillip Lopate, Rachel Cusk, and Laurie Stone would be delightful seatmates on a long journey. Kelly McMasters is another.
