TOKYO -- There were 646,800 vacant homes across the 23 wards of central Tokyo last year, the highest number in data going back to 1958, according to an Interior Ministry survey published Wednesday. The ministry surveys Japan's housing stock every five years. The 2023 survey put the percentage of vacancies in central Tokyo at 10.9%, up from 10.4% in 2018.

TOKYO -- U.S. tourists visiting Japan are spending three times as much on credit cards as they were before the coronavirus pandemic, data shows, with more than half going toward experiences like golf and theme parks. With more Americans visiting Japan, U.S. credit card spending in the January-June period was about triple the first half of 2019.

TOKYO -- Tokio Marine & Nichido Fire Insurance will start selling car insurance by the hour for ride-hailing operators in Japan, Nikkei has learned -- a first for a Japanese insurance company. Tokio Marine's insurance, which will start in January, will calculate premiums by the hour based on data from ride-hailing apps. Premiums will vary but are expected to be around 70 yen to 200 yen (50 cents to $1.42) per hour.

TOKYO -- Japan's government will create a unit assigned to protect ports, railways and airports from cyberattacks as early as fiscal 2025, Nikkei has learned, aiming to bolster defenses for critical infrastructure and enhance economic security. The Ministry of Land, Infrastructure, Transport and Tourism will include plans for the team in its organizational and staffing request for fiscal 2025, which begins in April.

TOKYO -- Japan plans to adopt measures to resolve an aviation fuel shortage that is threatening to ground a surging tourism industry, Nikkei has learned, securing more tankers and stepping up imports. The shortage has been fueled by a combination of factors, including oil refinery shutdowns that have lengthened distances to deliver fuel to airports, as well as regulations enacted in April that limit overtime for truck drivers, reducing hauling capacity.
