1. IntroductionHistorically, U.S. Spanish has been confined to a linguistic borderland and regarded as “deficient” and marginalized among Spanish varieties (e.g., Anzaldúa 1987; Christoffersen 2019). Speakers from Spanish-speaking populations in Latin America and Spain have long maintained negative attitudes toward the effects of contact with English, including adapted and non-adapted lexical borrowings (Moreno de Alba 2003).
