1 INTRODUCTION Soils are extremely diverse habitats, harbouring ~59% of the species on Earth (Anthony et al., 2023). Many taxa, including archaea, bacteria, fungi, viruses, protists and other microeukaryotes such as nematodes, are highly diverse and abundant in these systems (Guerra et al., 2021; van den Hoogen et al., 2019). In fact, below-ground biomass equals or potentially exceeds that above-ground, highlighting the importance of small organisms living within the soil (FAO et al., 2020).
