At the first “In conclusion”, my heart leapt with relief. Eighteen minutes later and the third time the preacher said “In conclusion”, my heart sank in despair. You can only take so many false starts of when a boring sermon is about to end before you feel like you’ll go insane. And there still were a few more “In conclusions” to go that day. I’ve sat through many a boring sermon in my time. We all have. It’s part of life. The preacher can’t be expected to hit a home run at every ballgame.

Our rhythm of the year goes kind of like this:This time of year, we’re all about peace and goodwill toward men, along, of course, with materialism, gluttony and glitz. After Christmas is over, we’ll enter into isolation, a sort of hibernation, huddled up alone in the dark against the cold. Our habits and meals are stark, in match with the environment, as we scale back in reaction to the excesses of the holiday season. Then spring comes and we are full of life and promise, ready to begin again.

A few years ago, when my elementary-school aged daughter was carrying on beyond what I had the patience for, I remembered The Look and wondered – “Should I?”How could I have forgotten The Look? It terrified me throughout my childhood. Yet once I was a mother, I tried various ways to deal with temper tantrums and misbehaviors, such as the “time out” that became the norm, but The Look never occurred to me. The Look seemed fully and completely and exclusively in my own mother’s realm.

It’s great to be patriotic, but we Americans have a history of letting what we think of as patriotism trick us into some bad business through the very place we should be thinking only of goodness and God – church. For the past almost 5 years, I have been looking through each day’s newspaper from 100, 75, 50 and 25 years ago, and reading several articles in each edition.

For a couple of 2-hour car rides, my daughter and I were transported out of our daily life and away from our actual ages, and we became timeless. That was all thanks to the magic of Christmas music. Of course, we marked the start of our Christmas music extravaganza with eyerolls and chuckles. We were driving to my best friend’s house, deep inside North Carolina, when we changed the stations on the radio dial.

If you live in northwestern Henry County, it’s only by a near miss that you don’t have to say you live on Wart Mountain. That’s the original English name of Chestnut Knob. Another early difference is that the Smith River used to be called the Irvine. Those and other details were revealed by Zack Fleming, in his program “The Maps of Thomas Jefferson,” which he gave recently as part of the Martinsville-Henry County Historical Society’s Sunday Afternoon Lecture Series.

Over its nearly 100 years, the Ohev Zion Synagogue in Martinsville has gone through the stages of growth, strength and decline — and appears to be on the rise once again. Dicky Globman, a member of the congregation and grandson of two of its founders, talked about Martinsville’s synagogue recently during a Sunday Afternoon Lecture at the Martinsville-Henry County Heritage Center & Museum, sponsored by the MHC Historical Society.
