Under-18s earn 20th successive league win with triumph over Boro

The triumph is our 20th successive league win - a run that began back in September. Finlay Gorman gave City the lead on the 20-minute mark and was quickly joined on the scoresheet by Ryan McAidoo when he made it two shortly afterwards. A three-minute brace from Matty Warhurst early in the second half put City firmly in the driving seat. McAidoo confirmed his brace just after the hour mark before Reigan Heskey completed the scoring to top off a fantastic outing for our young charges.

A clever backheel finish from early substitute Matty Warhurst gave City a deserved lead against a Liverpool outfit that has struggled for form this season. Less than a minute into the second half, Warhurst doubled City’s advantage with a lovely left-footed finish before Reigan Heskey bagged his own brace from a free-kick and penalty. To top off a clinical showing, Kian Noble added his name to the scoresheet in added time with a composed finish at the back post.

City’s 4-0 victory on Monday evening ensured our place at the summit with a total points tally of 47, the highest a team has achieved in the new format of the competition. Our EDS side also scored an impressive 61 goals and conceded just 23 in what has been a fantastic outing in the competition so far. The 19-year-old is a prevalent figure in our EDS side, totalling 17 league appearances which includes 14 wins, one draw, two defeats and seven clean sheets. Ben Wilkinson’s side have conceded just 23 goals in 20 games compared to last season’s 50. And Alleyne was quick to attribute City’s success in our own box to the camaraderie of the team, which has developed through more playing time together. “I think we’re just really enjoying it,” said Alleyne.

It was our 15th league win out of 20 games in a fight to qualify for the playoffs, with City also securing silverware by confirming our place at the league summit before our Round of 16 fixture. It’s been an incredible turnaround in performances from our EDS side who were unable to make the top 16 last season. Reflecting on the immense development of the squad over the past 12 months, Wilkinson was full of admiration for his youngsters.

Despite the assurance that one point would be enough to guarantee we finish at the PL2 summit, Ben Wilkinson’s EDS side were determined to put on a positive performance in front of the fans - and they delivered in some style. After intense pressure from City, Toon captain Cathal Heffernan misplaced his clearance to put us ahead inside the opening 10 minutes. Justin Oboavwoduo doubled our advantage shortly afterwards, his powerful effort leaving Adam Harrison in the Newcastle goal no chance.

It is the first time our Under-21s have topped the new format since its change prior to the 2023/24 campaign. Finishing top of the PL2 table also confirms our potential route to the PL2 playoff final, which would include a Round of 16, quarter-final, semi-final and final should City reach the showpiece occasion in May.
