On December 1, 2024, the Learn & Work Ecosystem Library (LWEL) will reach its second anniversary. While we have achieved rapid growth amid many challenges, a trusted colleague is urging us not to rest on our laurels. In fact, by wisely raising the “so what?” question, he’s challenging the project’s central vision. Do we still need a library like this? Who is going to use it and reuse it?

Let’s play a game of Jeopardy: The category: “Credentialing.” The answer: the numbers 338, 331, and 323. The question: How old are the nation’s oldest higher education institutions (Harvard, William & Mary, and Yale)? Why ask this question? Well, given the fact that the U.S. higher education system is more than three centuries old, it seems wise to ask whether it’s still effective. Has it changed enough to meet 21st century needs?
