The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency has fined one of Alaska’s biggest fishing companies nearly $1 million for Clean Water Act violations. American Seafoods Company is the world’s largest at-sea processor of Alaska pollock and holds the largest allocation of wild Pacific hake. The company operates a fleet of seven vessels in the North Pacific Ocean and Bering Sea.

Conservationists say more needs to be done to prevent such deaths. They plan to protest outside a fishing industry gathering in Seattle, where much of Alaska’s fishing industry is based, on Thursday.

According to NOAA Fisheries, a tenth whale was released alive, but the nine other orcas incidentally caught in trawl nets weren’t so lucky.

An Unalaska resident has been charged with 10 counts of illegal subsistence fishing violations. Fifty-nine-year-old Juliann Tucker received the citation Wednesday, following a nearly three-month investigation by the Alaska Wildlife Troopers. Unalaska Wildlife Trooper Jeremy Baum said Tucker fished illegally in Unalaska’s Reese Bay — a popular subsistence area where locals harvest mostly red salmon. “Ten violations for a subsistence case is significant,” Baum said.
