    US carrier JetBlue Airways reports an improving engine-availability situation as it has fewer aircraft grounded for Pratt & Whitney (P&W) turbofan overhauls than previously expected. Chief financial officer Ursula Hurley said during the company’s 29 April earnings call that JetBlue has “seen an improvement” from P&W as it works through a massive backlog of geared turbofan (GTF) engines that must be inspected for potential manufacturing defects in turbine blades.

    American Airlines has brought a lawsuit against former Northeast Alliance (NEA) partner JetBlue Airways as talks to revive that alliance have fallen apart. In a recent letter to American employees, chief strategy officer Steve Johnson addressed “industry rumours and media reports” regarding attempts to revive the NEA, which once saw the carriers collaborate to compete against Delta Air Lines and United Airlines in busy Boston and New York hubs.

    US discounter Spirit Airlines has been approved by the NYSE American for listing several months after filing for bankruptcy protection and being removed from the New York Stock Exchange. Spirit’s stock will start trading on 29 April under the ticker symbol FLYY, rather than its former SAVE symbol. Newly installed chief executive Dave Davis on 24 April called its NYSE American listing “an important next step in Spirit’s continued transformation”.

    United Airlines has become the latest major US carrier to throw support behind the development of start-up JetZero’s proposed blended-wing-body (BWB) airliner. The Chicago-based carrier said on 24 April that it has invested in JetZero – though it does not specify a dollar amount – and could order up to 200 of the BWB aircraft. ”The investment includes a path to order up to 100 airplanes and an option for an additional 100,” it says.

    Freight carrier Cargojet reports a surge of cargo entering Canada directly as other countries seek to avoid US tariffs, boosting its first-quarter revenue to record levels. The Ontario-based cargo carrier said on 23 April that it generated company-record first-quarter revenue of C$250 million ($180 million), up about 8% from C$231 million of revenue during the first three months of 2024.
