A few weeks ago, I got my third IUD. You’d think I would have been prepared. I am one of the many women who girded her loins against the possibility of a “Handmaid’s Tale”-style dystopian future by getting my first IUD shortly after the events of Nov. 8, 2016. The idea that my uterus would calmly surf the waves of political unrest for at least another 12 years was appealing.

It was Oct. 28, 2023. Gavin woke up late that Saturday and came out of the bedroom with his hand cupped around one side of his neck. “Hey, honey, does this side of my neck look bigger?” I looked at him, expecting to see a pimple or bug bite. But instead, I saw a bulge in the middle of his neck. I moved in quickly and poked it. It was hard, and the tissue around it was squishy. “Does that hurt?” I asked as I tapped it. He shook his head. “Does it hurt to swallow?” He swallowed and shook his head.

At that time, I was the head of HuffPost Queer Voices, a section of this site that I was hired to create and oversee in 2011. I spent a lot of my time writing about what needed to happen for queer people to feel seen and safe and, hopefully, at some point, gain full equality in this country.
