The new group backed by Israel and the US for aid distribution in Gaza says Hamas attacked a bus transporting some of its Palestinian workers, killing at least five people. The Gaza Humanitarian Foundation (GHF) said the attack happened on Wednesday night as the bus carrying more than two-dozen workers travelled to a distribution centre in southern Gaza, and that it came after days of threats from Hamas.

An Israeli air strike on Beirut's southern suburbs has killed four people, Lebanon's health ministry says, putting further pressure on a fragile ceasefire between Israel and the Lebanese armed group Hezbollah. The strike also injured seven people, the health ministry said. The attack was the second on the Dahieh area, where Hezbollah has a strong presence, in recent days, despite the truce that came into force in November.

Israel says it is attacking Hezbollah targets in southern Lebanon after rockets were fired from there into Israel for the first since a bilateral ceasefire deal came into effect in November. Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said he had instructed the Israel Defense Forces "to act forcefully against dozens of terror targets in Lebanon". The IDF earlier said three rockets were intercepted in the Israeli town of Metula on Saturday morning. No injuries were reported.

The fall of Bashar al-Assad was unthinkable just a week ago, when rebels started their astonishing campaign from their base in Idlib, in Syria’s north-west. Assad came to power in 2000 after the death of his father Hafez, who ruled the country for 29 years – and very much like his son, with an iron fist. Assad junior inherited a tightly controlled and repressive political structure. At first, there were hopes that he could be different – more open, less brutal. But those were short lived.
