    WHEN tour guides in Egypt describe how ancient Egyptian tombs were robbed of their treasures, they include a clarification: we mean by indigenous grave robbers, not the Western archaeologists who took the antiquities to museums and private collections abroad. On a recent trip to Egypt, I was struck by several guides’ lack of ambiguity that Western exploration was tantamount to theft, and their confidence in the rightful place of Egyptian antiquities.

    AS the BNP’s Sardar Akhtar Mengal marched towards Quetta last week, the idea recirculated: establish a truth and reconciliation commission for Balochistan. Political commentators, journalists and activists alike rightly highlight that at the core of the Balochistan crisis is the state’s lack of acknowledgement that legitimate grievances underpin militancy and anti-state violence. It is a truth easily accepted in other contexts but not entertained closer to home.

International Women’s Day celebrations were comparatively muted this year, with women’s rallies scattered between February and May, and attendance likely affected by the event coinciding with Ramazan.

    WHILE Pakistan clings to fantasies of hybridity regarding its political framework, the Economist Intelligence Unit has categorised it as an authoritarian regime. The EIU’s latest Democracy Index ranks Pakistan 124 out of 165 states and among the top 10 worst performers on factors such as government functioning, political participation and culture, electoral processes and civil liberties. We are not alone.

    THE ‘ugly American’ is back. The phrase refers to a 1958 novel which critiqued US diplomacy in Southeast Asia during the Cold War by depicting US diplomats as insular, arrogant and transactional. The book advocated for greater understanding of foreign cultures. It was this perception of the US that then president John Kennedy sought to temper through the launch of USAID and, with it, US soft power. But with that agency’s attempted dismantling, the ugliness is apparent once again.
