INTRODUCTION Dormant embryos of crustacean zooplankton that reside in lake and estuarine sediments must defend themselves against microbial attack with limited or negligible metabolic activity. Zooplankton in benthic environments are capable of extreme dormancy lasting centuries (Frisch et al., 2014; Hairston, 1996; Jiang et al., 2012; Marcus et al., 1994).
