Centre officials OK motions for affordable housing

BELLEFONTE — At this week’s Centre County Board of Commissioners meeting, the board approved a dozen motions aimed at improving access to more secure and affordable housing options, allocating $1.2 million to affordable housing projects. Of the 20 adult service items on the agenda, over half of them related to expanding access to housing and housing related services, with the rest pertaining to related administrative matters.

STATE COLLEGE — Grab your bags! Traveling from State College just got easier. State College Regional Airport announced on Tuesday it will expand its flight schedule this fall, adding additional non-stop routes to major hubs in Philadelphia, Chicago and Washington, D.C.Airport management worked closely alongside United and American Airlines to increase flight options from SCE ahead of the airport’s busiest time of year, which includes Penn State’s move-in and football season.
Grange Fair Queen crowned at 150th event

To much fanfare, the Grange Fair crowned this year’s queen, Kryslynn Ronk, 20, of Spring Mills, kicking off the fair’s 150th anniversary on Wednesday. The Penns Valley Area High School graduate was crowned the 2024 Centre County Grange Fair Queen by last year’s winner, Teaghan Bair, during a ceremony that celebrates agriculture and community tradition. The coronation marked the unofficial start of the Centre County Grange Fair, America’s last tenting fair.
EMS camp graduates 28 teens

28 high school students, largely from Bellefonte, Bald Eagle, Central Mountain, State College and Penns Valley, participated in a variety of hands-on educational experiences designed to spark their interest in emergency services. While many cadets are from the local area, some came as far as Mt. Pocono and the suburbs of Philadelphia to take part in the experience.

STATE COLLEGE — The National Bobblehead Hall of Fame unveiled a new Penn State Nittany Lions Football Bobblehead today, coinciding with the release of this week’s Preseason AP Top 25 Football Poll, where Penn State is ranked number 8. The bobblehead features the Nittany Lion holding a football on a football field base, with numbered blocks that can be adjusted when Penn State’s ranking changes.

To celebrate the historic occasion, the Centre County Commissioners officially recognized the 150th anniversary of the Great Grange Fair and unanimously proclaimed Aug. 16 to 24 as “Grange Fair Days” in Centre County. Joined by Grange Fair Committee President Barry Yarnell and Assistant Secretary Ben Haagen, commissioners lauded the fair as both an economic boon for the county and a pillar of the community.

Gathered at the fairgrounds’s Upper Horse Ring, Children of all ages climbed high onto their horses and ponies for a variety of child-friendly games, including obstacle courses, bobbing for apples, “Egg and Spoon,” “Dollar Bareback” and “Musical Bags,” for the chance to win cash and bragging rights. Central Mountain High School junior Baylon Mantle, 16, of Beech Creek, was one of the numerous young equestrians to win big.
