    Committee grilling Officials from the Grangemouth oil refinery will be questioned by MPs examining options for the Grangemouth site. Iain Hardie, head of legal and external affairs for the Petroineos joint venture, will face the Scottish Affairs Committee next week alongside Colin Pritchard, sustainability and external relations director for Ineos Grangemouth.

    There have been many words spoken and written about the future of Grangemouth as an important manufacturing base for Scotland - however, recently, political self-interest appears to have overtaken the truth. As the owners who have operated and funded the refinery since 2011, it was with a heavy heart that we took the decision to move towards bringing refining to an end next year and to invest our money instead in a terminal that will import and distribute the fuel Scotland needs to keep moving.

    Securing the future of Scotland’s manufacturing base will require a significantly more intelligent, fact-based and constructive debate than is currently under way. Next spring, Grangemouth refinery will probably cease production, to be replaced by an import terminal and distribution hub that will safeguard Scotland’s supply of finished fuels.

    A trade union official has called for a pause in plans to shut the Grangemouth refinery after casting doubts on claims made by the owner about its financial position. A senior figure at Petroineos, the joint venture that operates the plant, claimed last week that it was “not commercially viable” and reaffirmed that it is losing £385,000 a day. That put it on track for a £150m loss this year and the company plans to shut the facility next summer with 400 jobs likely to be affected.
