Tarling’s INEOS Grenadiers team are confident the Welsh star will start favourite for one of the two Individual Time Trials on this year’s Vuelta.

    By Hamish StuartWales international James Ashfield has been selected in the Great Britain and Ireland team to contest the St Andrew’s Trophy on Welsh soil next week. The biennial match against Continental Europe will take place at Royal Porthcawl on the 25 and 26 of July, with Ashfield hoping to help the home team retain the trophy they won two years ago in Slovakia.

The 20-year-old from Aberaeron has already been crowned European and British time trial champion and won world bronze in the event in 2023. Now Tarling, who will make his Olympic bow in Paris, is ready to take the next step after extending his deal with the team he joined in 2023.

The Welsh middle distance ace took almost a second off the mark set by Yvonne Murray 30 years ago. Courtney-Bryant clocked 5:26.08 – also adding another Welsh record to her collection – as she finished second to Australia’s Jessica Hull who clocked a world record 5:19.70.

Together they will be running two development programmes. One, for women and girls aged 15-19, at Cardiff University Sports Park, Mendip Road, Llanrumney, Cardiff, runs for ten weeks, starting next Wednesday 17th JulyThe second, for girls aged 11-14, at Penallta RFC near Caerphilly, runs for four weeks, starting on Sunday 4th August.
