The selection of Ireland’s Ronnie Dawson to lead the British & Irish Lions on their tour of Australia, New Zealand and Canada in 1959 caused a stir at the time and, it is fair to say, in the hooker’s own Dublin home. Dawson, who has died aged 92, later described receiving the letter from the Lions selectors telling him that he had been chosen as a tourist.

When rugby union’s wall of amateurism began to crumble in the late 1980s and early 90s, Jack Rowell’s Bath club were already professional in all but name. Bath dominated English club rugby and it was inevitable that Rowell, who has died at the age of 87, would go on to coach England. Rowell’s time as national coach was a turbulent one and he was a divisive figure. Complex, acerbic and sensitive, he was successful on the national stage, leading England to a grand slam and 21 victories in 29 games.

Sid Going, who has died aged 80, won 29 Test caps as a rugby union scrum-half for the All Blacks between 1967 and 1977, and made 86 appearances in all for New Zealand, captaining them five times. A taciturn man, he was nonetheless fluent in the language of rugby, and was one of the greatest of All Blacks scrum-halves. Prematurely bald and with a distinctive drooping moustache, Going featured during the 1970s in a fierce rivalry with the world’s leading scrum-half, Gareth Edwards.

In an international career that spanned just six years, Barry John, who has died aged 79, won 25 caps for his country and appeared in five Lions Tests. But the fly-half made enough of a mark during his brief time as a player to achieve something approaching mythical status in Wales. He was at the zenith of his powers on the Lions tour in 1971 to New Zealand, where his ability to ghost past would-be tacklers as if they did not exist was a major factor in the Lions winning the Test series 2-1.

In the closing minutes of Wales’s Five Nations meeting with France at Cardiff Arms Park in March 1976, the home side were resisting an onslaught by the visitors when the French wing Jean-François Gourdon found some space on the touchline by the north stand. Gourdon was then hit by a shuddering shoulder charge from Wales’s full-back, JPR Williams, that all but sent him spinning into the crowd. Williams raised his fist in triumph and Wales held on to win 19-13 and complete a seventh grand slam.

Saracens flew off to Pretoria happy to find some winter sun but this was a blast of cold reality. The Bulls fancy their chances of becoming the first South African side to win Europe’s Champions Cup and it is easy to see why. Most opponents leave the Loftus Versfeld Stadium empty handed and the three-times champions were no exception. Of course, no team with Owen Farrell in their side will be a pushover.
