MANILA, Philippines — Expelled lawmaker Arnolfo “Arnie” Teves Jr. has been repatriated to the Philippines after nearly two years of evading arrest. His return was confirmed by President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. in a video message on Thursday evening, May 29. “As we know, former congressman Arnie Teves is facing charges of murder and other crimes related to the ambush killing of former Governor Degamo. We would also like to assure our citizens that such lawlessness will not go unpunished,” Marcos said.

MANILA, Philippines — Once he resigned for giving airtime to a road rage suspect, now he is the highest-ranking police officer in the country. Police Major General Nicolas Torre III has been appointed as the new chief of the Philippine National Police (PNP). Executive Secretary Lucas Bersamin announced Torre’s appointment on Thursday, May 29, during a press conference in Malacañang. Torre will assume the post on June 2, succeeding Gen. Rommel Marbil, who served as PNP chief for a year.

As of writing, Teves has boarded a Philippine Air Force plane that landed in Dili, Timor-Leste, to pick him up.

MANILA, Philippines — University of the Philippines College of Law Dean Darlene Berberabe has been named the country’s new Solicitor General, succeeding outgoing chief government lawyer Menardo Guevarra. Guevarra confirmed Berberabe’s appointment to reporters on Thursday, May 29, following his submission of a courtesy resignation on May 23. His tenure as Solicitor General began in July 2022. End of Guevarra's term.

In its latest heat index bulletin, PAGASA placed several areas under the “danger” classification, with forecast heat index values ranging from 42°Celsius (°C) to 44°C.
