ANALYSIS: By Ian PowellWhen I despairingly contemplate the horrors and cruelty that Palestinians in Gaza are being subjected to, I sometimes try to put this in the context of where I live. I live on the Kāpiti Coast in the lower North Island of Aotearoa New Zealand. Geographically it is around the same size as Gaza. Both have coastlines running their full lengths. But, whereas the population of Gaza is a cramped two million, Kāpiti’s is a mere 56,000.

COMMENTARY: By Ian PowellThe 1981 Springbok Tour was one of the most controversial events in Aotearoa New Zealand’s history. For 56 days, between July and September, more than 150,000 people took part in more than 200 demonstrations in 28 centres. It was the largest protest in the country’s history. It caused social ruptures within communities and families across the country.

New Zealand’s youngest MP Hana-Rawhiti Maipi-Clarke began the traditional ceremonial chant and also ripped up a copy of the bill. Parliament was briefly suspended as people in the gallery joined in, and the shouting drowned out others in the room.

Agreed.

‘Newsroom’ has published my latest column which discusses ‘follow the money’ (aka ‘follow the health funding’) to understand the Government’s health policy. https://t.co/Z19tg7FH3Q
