    A new report by the influential “nudge” body Nesta has urged the government against expanding its obesity strategy to include specific targets against ultra-processed foods, warning it risks “undermining” the war on obesity. Nesta has produced figures that show up to 80% of UPF categories, including products such as confectionery, morning goods, cakes and crisps, are already covered by the government’s 2004 nutrient profiling model.

    Food industry bosses have warned its £37bn contribution to the UK economy is at risk unless ministers take “decisive action” to  invest in the sector. A new report by the FDF, based on the latest ONS data, today reveals the sector has grown by 17.9% over the past decade and now accounts for almost a quarter (24.2%) of total UK manufacturing turnover. The Powering Communities report highlights the economic contribution of the industry stretching across every region of the UK.

    Food companies have warned they will take legal action to challenge the government’s new junk food advertising ban unless it agrees to rewrite the regulation. The Grocer has learnt talks involving both supermarkets and major food manufacturers have reached “deadlock”, despite this week’s intervention by ministers in a bid to reassure brands they would not face hundreds of millions of pound of ads being inadvertently caught up by the ban.

    The government has intervened in a bid to prevent hundreds of millions of pounds’ worth of food industry ads from being banned under its looming junk food marketing regulations. In a statement published today, the government said the ban was not intended to block brand advertising that did not identify specific HFSS products. It said it expected its interpretation to be reflected in final ASA guidance to be published soon.
