IJ’s selections for 2024-25 Winter Athletes of the Year

Winter has been kind to Marin prep sports teams in recent years with at least one basketball and/or soccer team playing for the ultimate prize on the last day of the season. This year was no different as Marin Catholic won a state title in girls basketball, Archie Williams won a NorCal title in boys soccer, and Marin Academy played for a NorCal title in girls soccer.

The San Rafael High softball team may have started the league season with four consecutive losses but the Bulldogs are trending up as they hit the halfway point with a 3-0 victory against Marin Catholic on Monday. The blueprint for San Rafael (6-8, 3-4 MCAL) is simple – pitcher Thomara Drummer strikes out a bunch of hitters, leadoff hitter Sophia Everett and Drummer get on base, and someone drives them in a couple of times.

The MCAL softball and baseball seasons are around the midway point as we enter spring break. The softball season in particular has been filled with twists and turns but Redwood sits alone in first place following the first perfect game thrown by ace Stella Belluomini. Marin Catholic and San Rafael had big offensive weeks while compiling 2-0 records last week. In baseball, Redwood swept Marin Catholic in the marquee series of the week.

Redwood ace Stella Belluomini was perfect for five innings and many of the Giants' hitters were close to that standard as the trend of the top teams in the MCAL mercy ruling each other continued on Wednesday. Belluomini faced the minimum number of batters - 15 up, 15 down - for a stat line that mirrored the final score as the Giants rolled past Archie Williams 15-0 in five innings. "It feels really good," Belluomini said of her first perfect game.

After posting a 1-13 MCAL record last season, the Tam High softball team is making a serious push for the playoffs following a win over last year’s regular-season champ San Rafael plus another victory against a Terra Linda team that entered the week without a loss. The Red-tailed Hawks improved to 7-1 overall and 3-1 in league following strong performances by pitchers Eden Clark and Ava Lee. Archie Williams stayed unbeaten in league play in softball and has a win streak going in baseball.

The softball teams from Tam High and Terra Linda entered Friday’s head-to-head meeting with sparkling win-loss records, including victories over MCAL playoff teams from a season ago. Tam pitcher Ava Lee ensured that the Red-tailed Hawks’ early-season vibes continued, striking out 14 hitters and enjoying a five-RBI day at the plate to lead Tam to a 13-4 road win. “I’m super proud of our team,” Lee said. “We’ve just been rolling through the wins.
