The regulator Ofcom has decided to deploy timidity where ambition is needed. Rather than focusing on reducing harm and preventing tragedies, its approach seems aimed at minimising the economic costs for tech firms cleaning up the harm they have caused.

    I recently had a bizarre day in which in the morning, I spoke to the education minister and in the evening, I saw members of the small business ministry. Even though one might think the conversations would be different, they were remarkably similar. We talked about education and the shortage of skills in the current and future workforce, and how this could be addressed to help grow our sluggish economy.

    Next month marks seven years since my youngest daughter, Molly, died. Shockingly, the UK loses at least one child to suicide every week where technology plays a role. As we approach the first anniversary of the Online Safety Act, for which many like me campaigned tirelessly, I remain convinced that effective regulation is the most significant way to protect children from preventable online harm, and to prevent further families experiencing unimaginable loss.
