Growing up as a soccer-mad kid in the East Bay, Katelyn Rowland had to look a bit farther afield to find her sports heroes. Outside a few short-lived teams—notably the Brandi Chastain–led Bay Area CyberRays (2001–03)—top-flight women’s professional soccer has never found a true foothold here. Rowland is among those looking to change that.
