Pope Leo XIV will be formally inaugurated at a mass in St. Peter’s Square on May 18. World and religious leaders as well as the public will gather for the ceremony which is the formal beginning of his papacy. Last week, cardinals chose the Chicago-born Cardinal Robert Prevost to succeed Pope Francis who died last month. He took the papal name Leo XIV. He is the first pope from the United States, though the pope spent much of his life abroad as a missionary mainly in Peru.

Cleveland's infant mortality rate is significantly higher than the national average. Black babies are three times more likely not to make it to their first birthdays than white babies. A new birthing center in the city's Hough neighborhood aims to improve those numbers. The birthing center, operated by Birthing Beautiful Communities, will give women a space to give birth with a doula, and provide other support services like lactation consultants and mental health supports.

Pope Francis passed away Monday at the age of 88 following an extended battle with his health. He had been making more public appearances, including giving a final Easter blessing and taking a ride in his "popemobile" on Easter Sunday. Many had hoped that he was making a full recovery from a recent and intensive hospital stay and were shocked to learn the news of his death.

Several laws targeting child labor are making their way through the Ohio statehouse. A Republican sponsored bill would extend the hours young teens can work during the school year. Supporters say families who want their kids working jobs that run later should be allowed to do so. Critics say it's just another way to chip away at laws protecting kids, who they say should be studying or playing.
