If you’re a DevOps engineer, you know that the only constant you can count on is change. From Chef and Puppet, to Ansible, and then CloudFormation and Terraform, your configuration management tools have evolved rapidly over the past decade, and that shows no signs of stopping. Now, with Terraform's more restrictive license changes and new players entering the field, it’s time to reassess your Infrastructure as Code (IaC) strategies. You may be asking:Is Terraform dead?

While CSPMs (Cloud Security Posture Management) are everywhere, ironically enough they are not the right solution for a secure cloud. One of the key lessons I have learned from leading the platform group at a prominent CNAPP (Cloud Native Application Protection Platform) company, is that getting your cloud infrastructure under control starts with Infrastructure as Code (IaC).

The IaC landscape drama continues. If we thought everything would calm down following the Terraform license change, consequent forking of the project and establishing OpenTofu, and then the IBM acquisition of Hashicorp… well, think again.  While some pundits will claim —Terraform is DEAD— long live [ENTER FAVORITE IAC TOOL HERE], I think what is actually happening is quite a bit different and much more compelling.

As cloud practitioners, we can’t afford to bet on the wrong technology to manage our mission-critical infrastructure — especially when it’s so important for operations, so costly and so heavily invested in. That’s a big part of why Terraform’s restrictive license change, and subsequent acquisition by IBM, has much of the DevOps community in a frenzy.
