The ceremony kickstarted the renovation of the field, at 9119 Rhode Island Ave., into a seven-acre park for sports, entertainment and community events. “This will be a real asset to this community and the whole surrounding area,” Councilmember Alan Hew (District 1) said.

Festivities will include an invitation-only awards banquet and an event featuring a public display of antique fire apparatus and modern equipment, intended to be the highlight of the celebration, according to the department’s president, Pete Piringer. “It’s a special time. …100th anniversaries are a big deal,” Piringer said.

Thomas walked into a local barbershop for a haircut in 2005 and overheard a conversation between the barber and a customer who had just started taking a new medication. The barber told the customer the hypertension pills could hamper sexual performance. “I looked at [his] face. I’m realizing that he’s not going to take those pills,” Thomas, now the director of the Center for Health Equity at the University of Maryland (UMD), said.

Thefts from automobiles and thefts of automobiles are most prevalent, according to officers from the Metro Transit Police Department, Maryland-National Capital Park Police and Prince George’s County Police Department who spoke to the College Park City Council.
