MORRISVILLE, Vt. (WCAX/Gray News) - A Vermont man was charged with murdering his estranged wife in a cold case dating back 31 years. Police arrested Carroll Peters for the 1993 murder of his estranged wife, Cheryl Peters. For three decades, there were no charges in Cheryl Peters’ death. Now, Carroll Peters, 70, faces a first-degree murder charge for killing his 42-year-old estranged wife on Sept. 2, 1993, in her home.

PROCTORSVILLE, Vt. (WCAX) - A new documentary is raising awareness and funding for the flood-impacted community of Proctorsville. "The Forgotten" is a short film about the resilience of the Windsor County town following devastating flooding in July 2023. The filmmakers are taking their project around the state this summer and donating 100% of ticket sales and donations to the Plainfield flood relief fund.

MONTPELIER, Vt. (WCAX) - The numbers are in on last year's black bear population in the state. It's estimated that Vermont has between 6,300 and 7,600 bears based on the 2023 data. Those numbers are down a little from 2022 which was a five-year high. Although there is fluctuation in bear numbers, Vermont Fish and Wildlife says they are overall on a rising trend. Fish and Wildlife gets the numbers from hunter information, reported dead bears and sightings.

MONTPELIER, Vt. (WCAX) - Vermont's growing homeless population continues to be a challenge for municipalities, including creating division among some Montpelier residents over encampments in undesignated locations. Derek Malbroux lives in the woods off of Country Club Road in Montpelier, just next to the former Elks Club shelter that housed about 80 people last winter but that closed in the spring. "We are not hurting anyone. Nobody is being hurt out here," Malbroux said.
