When the philosopher Ivan Illich published his book Medical Nemesis: The Expropriation of Health, it stirred up a small storm in limited circles who were critical of medicine, such as my father and a few of his colleagues who, even at that time, in the ’50s, ’60s and ’70s saw the encroachment of big pharma in medicine as interference in their practice of medicine. Of course, it only got worse since then. My father was the bane of drug reps, who he refused to speak to.
