It’s nice to know there is fashion life outside fashion weeks. And what a life! As we speak, more than 100 designers and artists from over 20 countries are given a stage during the 16th edition of the international and multimedia FASHIONCLASH Festival in Maastricht. Branko Popovic co-founded the FASHIONCLASH Festival in 2009, aiming to create a platform beyond conventional fashion showcases, encouraging boundary-pushing experimentation and cross-disciplinary collaboration.

Fashion Month SS25 exposed the industry's duality—a conflict between creativity and consumerism, where some brands played it safe, while others plunged into commercial mediocrity. In its first collection post-Virginie Viard, Chanel failed to redefine itself, delivering another round of tweeds and ladylike looks. Balenciaga took its oversized, dystopian aesthetic to absurd new heights—more caricature than innovation.

Fashion month used to be the epitome of excitement for all fashion lovers—a collective frenzy for the few working in the industry. This season, however, lacks that excitement—at least for me—and thank God, none of the overwhelming workload, as I’m not attending. For the first time in years, I sit back happily, relying on the eyes of others for my infotainment: no FOMO, no chasing cabs amidst shows, no fake smiles.

Today's intro is all about imagination—or the lack thereof. As you may have noticed, New York Fashion Week is in full swing, but nothing is happening despite a few collections that feel very much like fashion school graduation projects. Don't get me wrong, there were moments—from the Coach teddy bear bag to Willy Chavarria’s new Americana and the literal fashion popcorn at Tommy Hilfiger.

One of the first things people ask me when they hear I work in fashion is: "Why are those prices so high? How can brands justify a $20,000 bag?". My instinctive response is: "Because they can" but I never utter it. Instead, I simply smile enigmatically as if gatekeeping a precious secret. Still, I decided to use this question as a prompt for our upcoming newsletter, where I'll be discussing luxury pricing with experts who truly understand the industry.
