A New Zealand-born Niuean educator says being recognised in the King's Birthday honours list reflects the importance of connecting young tagata Niue in Aotearoa to their roots. Mele Ikiua, who hails from the village of Hakupu Atua in Niue, has been named a member of the New Zealand Order of Merit for services to vagahau Niue language and education. She told RNZ Pacific the most significant achievement in her career to date had been the promotion of vagahau Niue in the NCEA system.

Samoa's Under-19 women's cricket captain Avetia Fetu is excited about her team's debut appearance at the ICC Under-19 Twenty20 World Cup in Malaysia. Her team won the East Asia qualifiers last year to claim a spot at their first World Cup competition. Speaking to International Cricket Committee (ICC) media, Fetu said the experience with the other team captains at the launch, in Kuala Lumpur on Tuesday, made their shock qualification and their tournament debut finally feel real.

First person - On 15 January 2022, the Hunga Tonga-Hunga Ha'apai undersea volcano erupted. It was the most powerful volcanic eruption since Krakatoa in 1883, and triggered a devastating tsunami which killed three people. The tsunami waves devastated the small islands of 'Atata and Mango, forcing the communities on both islands to relocate to the main island, Tongatapu, and the third largest island, 'Eua. RNZ Pacific journalist, Iliesa Tora, was in Nuku'alofa on the day of the eruption.
