    Today I am older than my father, Malcolm X, ever was. For the rest of my life, I will be older than my father ever had the opportunity to be, living the experiences age brings that he never had the chance to enjoy. As I look back on my life, I see how profoundly different it has been from his.  The America in which he lived for a mere 39 years, until his death in 1965, is one that I cannot ever truly understand—despite having spent my life thinking, writing and speaking about it.
