The Ontario Library Association (OLA) and the Forest of Reading have announced the winners of the 2024 Forest of Reading Awards. The two-day event, which had an in-person and digital component, was hosted by Hamilton teen and book-club host Ainara Alleyne and comedian Ali Hassan. Rosena Fung has been drawing and making comics since as early as she can remember – Grade 1, to be precise. She read the Archie Comics she inherited from her mom voraciously and knew immediately that “this is all I want to read and do.” In fact, it was her dream to be an artist for Archie Comics. But Fung’s path wasn’t linear. Social and family expectations coupled with personal pressures had Fung second-guess the viability of being an artist.

Ainara Alleyne, host of the TVOkids series Ainara’s Bookshelf, is set to launch Ainara’s Book Club. The book club website will feature The Barren Grounds by David A. Robertson, From the Desk of Zoe Washington by Janae Marks, The Witch Boy by Molly Knox Ostertag, Witchlings by Claribel A. Ortega, and Beatrice and Croc Harry by Lawrence Hill. “I’m thrilled with the launch of the companion website Ainara’s Book Club,” said Ainara Alleyne in the press release.

This month, 16-year-old Nathan Hellner-Mestelman – who directed, wrote, and produced the 2022 documentary short Universe Versus You screened at film festivals internationally – makes his literary debut with Cosmic Wonder: Our Place in the Epic Story of the Universe (Linda Leith Publishing). The nonfiction young adult book shares with readers the story of the making, and expanding, of the universe.

Illustrator Todd Stewart has won the 2023 Elizabeth Mrazik-Cleaver Canadian Picture Book Award. Each year, IBBY Canada awards $1,000 to a Canadian illustrator for “outstanding artistic talent” in a Canadian picture book. Stewart won for his work on Jean E. Pendziwol’s Skating Wild on an Inland Sea (Groundwood Books).
