Happy nearly Easter! This lovely painting is by Beth Spencer, just for us. I love all its textures. I am so grateful to Beth for agreeing to illustrate some of these posts - whenever one of her pictures pings in it just makes my day. This post is free to read. Do consider a paid subscription if it’s your cup of tea.

Good morning. This is a free post, so welcome if you haven’t been here before (and also if you have! SPECIAL welcome if you have, in fact. Warmest embrace). This is the third instalment of a series called Me & My Desk, which exists because I find other writers’ work routines and work environments deeply fascinating. You can read about Andrew O’Hagan’s desk here and about Clover Stroud’s desk here. More desks coming up. Would you like a warmest embrace too? All subscribers get one automatically.

Good morning! I wish the dogs would bark for breakfast after 6am. What could be nicer than David Hockney first thing? Not much, as far as I’m concerned. These iPad paintings are from 2020, when Hockney, then in his eighties, was in lockdown at his house in Normandy. It was an incredibly productive period for him - he made painting after painting of the unfurling of spring. 116 of them later became an exhibition at the Royal Academy.

Good morning! I like reading bed links, with bed tea, on a Saturday morning, so I’ve moved these round-ups from Fridays in the hope that you do too - or that you’re at least reading this somewhere comfy rather than at a desk or on the way to work. Outside with a cup of coffee, maybe. Lolling on a sofa. In the bath! Morning baths always feel like the world is your oyster, or like that Frank O’Hara line about the day coming fat with an apple in its mouth.

For most of us, the best thing we can do for our hair is brush it. Yes, of course, there are lots—well, several—of wonderful products that will address, and remedy, specific concerns. But the fact remains, the best thing of all is brushing it. This applies whether you have normal hair, thick hair, fine hair or even thinning hair. (If you have thinning hair and are scared of brushing it, hold it halfway down its length and brush the lower half first, then proceed gently to the scalp.

Good morning, just about. Quite chilly here, plus due to my terrible maths we have run out of heating oil. I said I wasn’t going to post today but that is because I thought yesterday was Friday (I know, a poor few days on the organisational front). Quite nice to discover there’s a whole other day in the week, though.

The new hen house is in situ! It has been immortalised especially for this newsletter by the genius that is Beth Spencer and I LOVE it - both the illustration, which is my absolute fave one so far, and the physical hen house, which I’ve ogled longingly online for about six years. Our patched-up, third-hand old one finally gave up the ghost, so it was time.
