Happy summer solstice! There’s luck and magic in the air. This hot, still weather always reminds me of my paternal grandmother, who would stand outside on summer mornings and declare, in a disapproving but also deeply satisfied way, ‘il n’y a pas un souffle de vent’ - ‘there isn’t a breath of wind’. My maternal grandmother would make us yogurt drinks, which is what I’m going to do as soon as I post this (except salted, with cumin).

Good morning! This is the fourth instalment of a series called Me & My Desk, which exists because I find other writers’ work routines and work environments fascinating. You can read about Andrew O’Hagan’s desk here, Clover Stroud’s desk here and Emma Gannon’s desk here. Poorna and I were at the same party in London recently and before realising Poorna Bell was Poorna Bell I had already clocked her excellent outfit and outstanding eye makeup and wondered who she was. She looked so cool and chic.

Good morning! I just watched a squirrel sit in the trough I grow salad leaves in and methodically work his way through a whole row of rocket/arugula. On Tuesday Substack had a really good party in Montague Square Gardens. You access it by going through these little quite secret gates, and then wham, a great big garden square (and a harpist, in this instance). There were lots of interesting and clever and amusing people, from all the different categories of newsletter.

Good morning! Thank you so much again for all the lovely comments under my book post, and for the pre-orders, for which I am truly grateful. Also: the gorgeous painting on the jacket of my book is by Anna Hymas and her website is here. If you go here you can buy her prints, including of the painting we’ve used for my cover. Here, in no order, are some things that caught my eye this week, followed by a bit on my experience of Mounjaro. Not as random as it seems - it links to one of my picks.

My quest for glowing (bare) skin continues. I’m being very single-minded about it because I don’t like wearing foundation at the best of times, and in the summer least of all. This year I’m seeing if I can swerve even tinted moisturiser/my beloved Erborian BB Cream. Probably not, but I’m having fun trying. I sang the praises of snail mucus a couple of weeks ago for its rehydrating and glow-giving properties—you may be interested to know that I love it even more now than I did then.
