A building where the author Thomas Hardy trained as an architect has been left a charred wreck after a fire. The blaze on Dorchester's South Street swept through The Gorge Cafe and spread to the roofs of neighbouring properties on Monday shortly after 03:30 GMT. The Thomas Hardy Society said: "We are deeply saddened this was such an important piece of Hardy history."Dorset firefighter and police are at the site of the burnt-out building where a stretch of the street remains cordoned off.

About 50 firefighters are tackling a fire at a cafe in Dorchester which has caused the building to partially collapse. The fire broke out at The Gorge Cafe on South Street shortly after 03:30 GMT. The blaze had also spread into the roof spaces of two neighbouring properties, Dorset & Wiltshire Fire and Rescue Service said. No injuries have been reported, but a number of local residents have been moved to a safe place and those living nearby have been urged to keep windows and doors closed.

A theatre forced to close after it was left awash with floodwater following Storm Bert is set to reopen its doors. The Mill Arts Centre, in Banbury, had only recently opened its auditorium after flooding in February damaged the stage and floor. The theatre said the cleaning and drying process was well under way, with all classes and workshops due to take place as normal from Monday. The main theatre will reopen on Thursday with a Christmas production of The Gruffalo.

Mains power at Iford Bridge Home Park was turned off on Monday night with residents urged to leave as levels rose on the River Stour. On Tuesday, firefighters rescued 12 people and four dogs from their flooded homes at the park near Bournemouth.
