1 INTRODUCTION The skull of jawed vertebrates (Gnathostomata) typically consists of three parts. Most of the skull's outer surface, like the skull roof and most palatal bones, is part of the dermatocranium. It consists of dermal, or membrane, bone, which develops directly in connective tissue during embryonic development (Liem et al., 2001; Romer & Parson, 1983). Among gnathostomes, the dermatocranium was secondarily lost in cartilaginous fish (Chondrichthyes) (Zhu et al., 2022).
