In August 2021, even before its major rounds of layoffs, Intel announced that it was closing its RealSense 3D depth camera division based on its acquisition of several Israeli startups, and in which most of its employees were in Israel. Some employees were laid off but the activity was not shut down but kept on a back burner for several years.

The Treasury's "$25 billion new fab" is actually an upgrade to existing plans, part of a general strategy at Intel. At a time when companies are abandoning Israel, US chip maker Intel plans to expand its investment here: the Ministry of Finance announced yesterday that it had reached an agreement with the company whereby it will upgrade the fab currently under construction in Kiryat Gat and double its area.

Israel has reached agreement in principle with semiconductor giant Intel on the construction of a new fab in Kiryat Gat at an investment of $25 billion. Minister of Finance Bezalel Smotrich and Commissioner of Budgets Yogev Gardos have informed Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and Minister of Economy and industry Nir Barkat of the successful outcome of the negotiations with Intel.

Yesterday, Intel Corporation announced cuts in compensation for senior and middle managers, after releasing weak quarterly financials. The move will affect thousands of employees in Israel at grade seven and upwards in the company’s internal classification. Senior managers, such as divisional managers who report directly to the CEO will have their pay cut by 15%, while the basic pay of the CEO himself, Pat Gelsinger, will be cut by 25%.
