Ione WellsSouth America correspondentWhen Donald Trump revealed the level of trade tariffs that countries around the world would face from the US, nations in South America breathed a sigh of relief. Ten of the 12 states on the continent received the lowest level of 10%. Only Guyana and Venezuela were initially hit with higher rates of 38% and 15% respectively, before these were subsequently reduced to 10%. This came as Trump decided to pause elevated rates on almost all countries for 90 days.

Smiling, he continued: "A greeting to all and in particular to my dear Diocese of Chiclayo, in Peru."The first American pope is a citizen of Peru and has spent much of his life there, travelling between the two countries for decades until 2014, when Pope Francis appointed him bishop of the Chiclayo Diocese in the country's north.

The health of Brazil's former president Jair Bolsonaro has worsened after intestinal surgery earlier this month, according to his medical team. The 70-year-old remains in intensive care and will undergo new tests. Bolsonaro was visited in hospital by a court official on Wednesday, who delivered a summons giving him five days to present his initial defence against coup charges, in preparation for his trial.
