The India Meteorological Department (IMD) is looking to access data from CubeSats, crowdsourcing, and Internet of Things devices besides conventional weather satellites to improve it forecast accuracy, a former official said. The IMD has also sent a dedicated meteorological satellite in orbit and installed a new high power computing system (HPCS) last year that would allow it to issue more accurate forecasts.

Gold smuggling appears to be on rise as seizure by Custom officials surged 40 per cent during fiscal year 2023-24, says the annual report on smuggling prepared by Directorate of Revenue Intelligence. Released on Wednesday as part of 67th foundation day of DRI, the report showed over 4800 kg gold was seized by Custom field formation during FY24 as against around 3500 kg in FY23. During the same period, gold seizure by DRI came down to over 1300 kg against over 1400 kg.

Rice procurement in Punjab and Haryana — two key States for the Central Pool stock maintained by the Food Corporation of India (FCI) — has ended with a 7.4 per cent drop to 151.52 lakh tonnes (lt) against 163.63 lt in 2023. The government had set a target to buy 164 lt this year amid a bumper crop. There is no extension of procurement until now.
