Huawei Technologies has taken a step forward in phasing out American hardware and software from its personal computers, as it navigates ongoing US sanctions. The government-backed China Information Technology Security Evaluation Centre said on Friday that the Kirin X90 chip – a central processing unit (CPU) developed by Huawei’s chip design arm, HiSilicon – received a Level 2 national certification for security reliability.

Biren Technology, one of China’s challengers to Nvidia, raised a new round of funding led by a state-owned fund in Shanghai, as the US-sanctioned artificial intelligence (AI) chip start-up gears up for an initial public offering (IPO) in the country. The company, valued at US$2.2 billion according to the 2024 Hurun Global Unicorn List, secured fresh funding from a private equity entity under Shanghai State-owned Capital Investment (SSCI), according to the investment fund.

Naura Technology Group climbed up in the rankings of the world’s biggest semiconductor equipment suppliers in 2024, as China’s leading chip tool maker braced for tighter US tech restrictions. Beijing-based Naura was ranked sixth among global chipmaking equipment suppliers by revenue last year, up from eighth place in 2023 when it cracked the industry’s top-10 leaderboard for the first time, according to a report last week by Chinese semiconductor research firm CINNO.

Agibot, founded by Huawei Technologies’ former “Genius Youth” recruit Peng Zhihui, has launched a general artificial intelligence (AI) model that can enable humanoid robots to understand and perform real-world tasks quickly. The Shanghai-based start-up unveiled Genie Operator-1 (GO-1), a foundation model designed to serve as a general-purpose brain for humanoid robots to help them learn and adapt quickly, according to a company statement issued on Monday.
