Irv Oslin/Special to Ashland Times-GazetteAshland Times-GazettePerils of sleeping in a screened porch during a severe thunderstorm. The storm’s intensity created a sense of exhilaration and connection with nature. Reflection on humanity's destructive impact on the environment. Grand Lake St. Marys was hand-dug in the 1800s by Irish and German immigrants to feed the Miami & Erie Canal in the 1800s. The lake became a recreational area after the canal system became obsolete, but toxic algae blooms plague the lake in the present day. The lake is only six or seven feet deep, leading to warnings about diving near the shoreline. White pelicans stop at the lake during their migration in the spring and late summer.
