Melatonin will soon be available over the counter at pharmacies after the Government said it would relax restrictions on the sleep medication. Medsafe has also approved the use of medicinal psilocybin - also known as magic mushrooms - for patients with depression. At present, melatonin is a restricted medication in New Zealand and most patients require a prescription. It is commonly used to treat insomnia or jet lag.

University of Auckland vice-chancellor Dawn Freshwater has resigned. The university said today Freshwater had tendered her resignation but would remain in the role until early 2026. Chancellor Cecilia Tarrant said the extended notice period would allow the university to find a new vice-chancellor. Freshwater was the university’s first female vice-chancellor when she was appointed in March 2020 and steered the university through the Covid-19 pandemic.
