With Omaha hockey squarely in the race for the right to host an NCHC Quarterfinal series next month, a bye week couldn’t have come at a better time. The Mavericks got last weekend off after dropping both games to No. 3 Western Michigan the week before, giving them an opportunity to reset before the final four games of the regular season. For players like alternate captain Sam Stange, however, the bye was both a blessing and a curse.

The Blackhawks currently find themselves in the dog days of the season, with not a lot going right at the NHL level and the team seemingly counting the days until the campaign is over. But starting as early as next week, things could get a heck of a lot more interesting. Chicago should be right at the center of the trade deadline drama before March 7 and could potentially trade a big name like Seth Jones along with a handful of other pieces.

Over the past few seasons, not a lot has gone right for the Blackhawks. The team waved goodbye to huge stars like Patrick Kane and Jonathan Toews and has lived among the worst teams in the NHL since, stocking up on draft lottery picks but having little to show for it in the standings. The pressure in the organization has shifted from the players (with plenty of roster turnover) to the head coach (fired) and all the way up to GM Kyle Davidson and team owner Danny Wirtz.

While many were excited to see the Blackhawks finally back from a two-week break for the 4 Nations Face-Off, Chicago’s return has been anything but triumphant. The Blackhawks have lost their two games since the break by a combined score of 10-3, a resounding reminder that the team is nowhere near contention and will be spending the rest of the season battling for a better spot in this summer’s draft.

Earlier this month, I wrote that the Blackhawks are fairly likely to get rid of trade chips like Seth Jones, Ryan Donato and Alec Martinez at the trade deadline on March 7. Jones in particular has made it clear that he wants out of Chicago, going public with his request for a trade. Most of the conversation around the Blackhawks has been around what they can get for Jones, and if he could be traded before the deadline.

On Wednesday, Blackhawks defenseman Seth Jones was thrust into the spotlight for the millionth time during his time in Chicago when he told Ben Pope of the Chicago Sun-Times that he and the Blackhawks were in open trade talks. The news wasn’t exactly a big surprise – Jones hasn’t made it a secret that he wants out of Chicago in order to go to a Stanley Cup contender and he’s certainly not worth the $9.5 million that the Blackhawks are paying him.

For an outsider looking at the Blackhawks’ list of contracts, anyone would do a double take – even with several players being signed to high-dollar contracts last summer, Chicago has a huge outlier on the books. Defenseman Seth Jones, who has been a polarizing player during his time with the Blackhawks, makes a whole $4 million per year more than Tyler Bertuzzi, the next-highest mark. It’s no secret that Jones’ contract is one of the worst in the NHL when it comes to Chicago’s bang for its buck.

It’s no secret that the 2024-25 season hasn’t exactly been what the Blackhawks expected. The team brought in a slew of veterans during a hectic free agency window in hopes of at least getting out of the basement of the NHL standings. Now, with 27 games remaining in the year, they find themselves with the second-lowest points, ahead of only the Sharks. That isn’t to say that this year hasn’t been a success on at least some levels.
