Saxbys at 40th and Locust streets will close by May as Penn Dental Medicine ends the coffee shop’s lease to convert the space into a sedation center with operatories and recovery areas. Penn Dental is set to transform the space within the Robert Schattner Center, leased to Saxbys since 2015, as part of an expansion driven by the 2021 opening of the Care Center for Persons with Disabilities and the school’s longstanding plans to enhance sedation services, according to a Penn Dental spokesperson.

The Leonore Annenberg Institute for Civics awarded its 2024 Civic Mission of the Nation award to PBS News Hour Classroom. The funding — which consists of $58,000 to be used starting January 2025 — will support the creation of multimedia resources for community colleges and other young adult learners, according to the Annenberg Public Policy Center announcement.

As Penn seniors look ahead to their job prospects after graduation, several students expressed concerns about entering the fields of public service and the arts following the election of 1968 Wharton graduate Donald Trump as president. In 2023, the DP that almost 50% of Penn graduates go into finance or consulting following graduation — the highest percentage of any Ivy League institution — and that the numbers seem to be climbing.

Penn's School of Nursing received a $3.2 million grant to improve firearm safety from the National Institute of Nursing Research. The five-year grant will support a study on secure firearm storage intervention at the Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia, aiming to protect children from firearms and promote “secure firearm storage." Firearms are the leading cause of death for childrens and teens in the United States, according to the Penn Nursing announcement on Oct. 24.

Penn Medicine announced that it will expand its geriatric care program in eastern Pennsylvania by utilizing a $5 million Geriatrics Workforce Enhancement Program grant from the federal Health Resources and Services Administration. The program, which is called Advancing Geriatrics Education with Strategic, Multi-dimensional, Age-friendly Resources and Training, was created to educate and improve care for the elderly, according to a on Sept. 30.

FRIDAY, AUGUST 16th I jolt awake around 5:30. Net three-ish hours of sleep. Great idea before a six-hour drive through the desert. The sun rises over Los Angeles. I watch as the sun drapes the Paramount water tower in an early morning shade of pink, too rich for bleary eyes. I should start packing. After my last day of work, I have one last In–N–Out. I wish it wasn’t as damn good as it is. How dare an LA thing not be overrated. It offends my delicate New Yorker sensibilities.

United RAs at Penn has accused the University of enacting union-busting tactics against the newly-formed Resident Advisor union. URAP filed an Unfair Labor Practice Charge with the National Labor Relations Board on Aug. 12. In an email, they alleged that the University is suppressing the ability of the newly-unionized GRAs to seek other on-campus employment via tracking their hours in Workday.

The University of Pennsylvania has sued BioNTech, alleging that the German biotechnology company has underpaid royalties owed to Penn for patents used in BioNTech’s and Pfizer’s COVID-19 vaccine. The lawsuit, filed in Pennsylvania federal court on Aug. 5, includes two breach of contract claims. The first accuses BioNTech of “failure to pay royalties on net sales of licensed product,” while the second alleges “improper royalty reduction” by the company.
